Many years ago, Charlotte developed a Mental Health Model for Schools following a recognition of the increased need to provide emotional support to both students and staff within an educational setting. This model has been rolled out successfully across numerous primary and secondary schools situated within Lancashire and South Wales, with multiple articles being published on it across various sectors. Charlotte had campaigned tirelessly for years to make changes to young people’s mental health and ensure more support is available for them within an educational setting. This has included setting up a petition to argue for mental health to be taught on the school curriculum prior to it being brought in by the government and offered to students through the PHSE curriculum. In addition to Charlotte arguing for the urgent need to recruit more therapists in counsellors to be employed within schools before the Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) were implemented.
After over twenty years of working in health and education, including being employed within numerous schools, alternative provisions, CAMHS, third sector organisations, as well as on the acute psychiatric wards, Charlotte has argued for the need to merge the two systems to ensure a young person’s needs are met holistically. The Tiered Support Services offered to schools and the development of My Oasis TAP have therefore been established because of this. CLPS Ltd. and My Oasis has now grown to consist of a dedicated team of professionals who all share the same passion, values and compassion towards the students we support, ensuring each young person referred to us feels valued and part of the My Oasis family.
My Oasis subsequently differs from other alternative provisions available by offering both the specialist academic and therapeutic support in centre, helping to reduce the long waiting times often faced by young people. We offer a personalised support package for each young person referred to us, developing strong relationships with our students as our main vehicle to promote positive changes. We ensure each young person flourishes emotionally and socially, feeling understood and listened to prior to re-engaging them in their learning.
Having struggled with her own mental health throughout her life, Charlotte’s passion stems from battling to ensure that no other young person struggles the way she did when she was a teenager. Charlotte believes many mainstream schools struggle to meet the needs of neurodiverse young people, often trying to make a “square peg fit into a round hole”. At My Oasis we aim to provide our students with the confidence, therapeutic skills, ambition and educational progress to successfully reintegrate back into a mainstream school, a specialist provision or further education/training. This includes cultivating a healthy and productive lifestyle, personal resilience and the skills and values required to become responsible members of society.
